Wells City Harriers

"A FRIENDLY RUNNING CLUB THAT WELCOMES ATHLETES OF ALL AGES AND ABILITIES"

There were some excellent performances at the weekend for the Harriers. Frank Tickner won the hilly Frome Half marathon in 71.14, whilst Oliver Fox was 1st home in the accompanying 10k in 32.36; and Colin Williams was 1st V60 in the 5k race in 21.14. Meanwhile at track and field there were Harriers out competing on Saturday and Sunday – and in Sophie Hamilton’s case, on both days. Sophie was close to her 800m pb on the Saturday when she won valuable points for the team in the UK Youth Development League. Harriet Fox has gone into the top ten nationally with her triple jump of 10.10m on the Sunday at the SW Athletics Championships, whilst Dylan Dukes is now top of the SW rankings for the 3000m distance.

On the Saturday (July 18th) at the 4thand final fixture for the u13/u15 Youth Development League (SW League Div 1) match at Yeovil Arena, the joint Yeovil and Wells team finished 3rd out of the 6 competing teams.

U15 girl Sophie Hamilton won the 800m in 2.23, close to her pb, and was 2nd in the Javelin with a pb of 23.66m. Elise Thorner won the High Jump in 1m49 before narrowly failing when attempting a new PB of 1m57. She also came 2nd in the Long Jump with a leap of 4.43m and dead heatied for 2nd in the 300m in a new PB of 44.0. Elise and Sophie also made up part of the 4 x 300m relay team coming in 2nd place. In the same age group, Gemma Phillips came 3rd in the discus with 11m73 and 5th in the 300m with 50.0

U13 boy Adam Davison, competing for the first time in the U13 boys, came 2nd in the 75mh in 16.4 and then ran the 100m in a creditable 14.6. U15 Ollie Thorner came 2nd in the 80mh in 12.5, won the PV with 3.00m and also the Long Jump with a leap of 5.31m. Ollie was also a part of the 4 x 300m team which finished in 2nd place. Final League standings for the team are awaited.

On the Sunday (July 19th) at the South West Athletics Championships at Exeter Arena,. U15 Dylan Dukes smashed his 3000m pb when running 9.48 and going to the top of the SW rankings for his age group over the distance. He was one of a number of Harriers competing for the Somerset team and one of the few Somerset athletes to win their event outright. Dylan’s time is the 18th best nationally in 2015 for the u15s.

In the u15 girls, Harriet Fox was 2nd in the Triple jump with a new pb of 10.10m which takes her into the top ten nationally at this discipline; and she was 4th in the 300m in a new pb of 45.04; whilst Sophie Hamilton was 4th in a tight finish in the 1500m with 4.55 which was pretty good given that she’d competed less than 24 hours before. Oliver Dickinson was 2nd in the 3000m for u17men with 9.33.

Also running well on the road at Frome (July 19th) for a top ten finish in the half marathon was Chris Green with his 9th place finish in 80.45; whilst Tony Watts completed the 10k in 46.42 for 48th place. Frank Tickner also won 'King of the Hill' held within the half marathon race.
