Wells City Harriers

"A FRIENDLY RUNNING CLUB THAT WELCOMES ATHLETES OF ALL AGES AND ABILITIES"

Wells City Harriers have again been in action on the track this past weekend as part of the combined team with Yeovil Olympiads. On the Saturday a small squad competed in the 2nd of the Club’s National Young Athletes League matches for u13s/u15s at Braunton, whilst on the Sunday a much larger contingent were competing at the 2nd of the South West League Division One matches (for all age groups) at the Exeter arena. Meanwhile the Glovers were out competing hard at Ninesprings and Justin Thomas is well to the fore in the latest Somerset Series rankings, but with Kieran Young indicating perfect form..

It was on the Sunday at the SW League Div 1 that the Harriers managed to pull out the best results with a number of juniors, in particular, excelling to win their events. In the u15 girls Vicky McCabe again had another good weekend when she won the Long Jump in 5.06m, and also posted good times over the 100m and 200m with 13.62 and 27.68. Sophie Hamilton was another winner over the 800m with her victory coming in 2.27, with team-mate Elena Sidman just a step behind in 2.28. Sophie also posted a useful discus throw of 18.97m. Also in the u15 girls, Elise Thorner competed in three individual events achieving 28.62 for the 200m, long jumping out to 4.00m and putting the shot out to 7.04m - all of this after competing the previous day too! Gemma Philips competed in the Discus and achieved a 9.72m mark and also had a go at 100m (sprinting 15.39) and the 800m (3.03).

For the u15 boys at Exeter, Ollie Thorner achieved a first and a second in his events. His High Jump of 1.65m gave him victory, whilst his 800m time of 2.15 was good enough for second. (Ollie also competed the day before, see below). Dylan Dukes was also a winner with his 3000m time of 10.15, and he also produced a useful javelin throw of 27.39. George Biss also had a good run in the 800m to gain valuable team points with his 2.31 clocking. His elder brother Michael ran his 800m in the u17 event in 2.12, whilst his father Neil almost completed the set of Biss family 800s when he ran 2.29 for the senior men’s event. Neil also achieved 18.10 for 2nd place in the 5000m on the track. Paul Allen was 2nd in the senior men’s 800m with his 2.06 clocking.

Our sister club's members (those who pay their subs to Yeovil direct!) also had some excellent performances across all of the age groups of course. Our correspondent reports on the u13 girls:" We welcomed Jessica Flanagan to the team for her first competitive athletics meeting. One of the many highlights was Harriet Tuson clearing 1.30m in the high jump after only
one previous training session (and much to the surprise of her parents). Yet again the girls earned some superb PB's across most of the events and overall we had top 3 positions in all but one of the events with another superb 4 x 100m relay race finishing in a strong 3rd position. " (Darren White)

Overall at Exeter the combined team finished 2nd out of the 7 teams, beaten by the narrowest of margins by Taunton AC. With two more fixtures to go the Club is handily placed to finish in the top two if it can sustain its challenge. All Harriers should make contact with the Team managers as soon as possible to offer to compete at a forthcoming League or Cup match - see 'Team News and Contacts' tab above.

On the previous day, at Braunton in the National Young Athletes League , there were a number of personal bests by the team of u13s/u15s that competed. Ollie Thorner picked up a pb when he won the Pole Vault with 2.90m, and also a pb, though wind assisted, in the 80m hurdles when winning in 12.4. he also finished 2nd in the High Jump with 1.65m. Innes Davidson achieved a pb in the 1500m with 5.21 and also in the Shot with a 7.72m distance, and another pb in the 200m in 27.5. Elise Thorner was 2nd in the 800m in 2.22 and also gained points with her Long Jump of 3.86m

Meanwhile on the road or at multi-terrain races, we had u11 Bradley Glover winning the 2km fun run at the Ninesprings event in a nippy 8.14, whilst his father Mike was an excellent 4th, 1st V40, in the main hilly 9km event in a time of 39.41. In the mass event of the Bristol 10k, Berni Mundy was home in 46.53 and Sharon Bowles in 58.27. There may have been other Harriers competing and their results are to be confirmed.

A number of the harriers have been up to the Cotswolds to recce their legs for the forthcoming Cotswold Way Relay (Saturday June 27th). The Club has two teams of ten entered for the 103 mile off-road relay and are now needing another leg one runner (7.00am start!) - if you are interested in being part of a Harrier team please contact Paul or Mike. Details about the legs etc can be found at http://www.cotswoldwayrelay.co.uk/

Harriers are reminded that the next race in the Somerset Race Series is at Crewkerne on Sunday with an early race start of 10.00am for the hilly road 10k.. the latest standings in the Series show Justin Thomas out in front and setting the pace, with Duncan Verel not too far behind. Note Kieran Young though has perfect form with 4 wins out of 4 so far. The best 10 results for each runner over the Series - 20 races in total- will count.
