There were some good performances at track and field over the weekend of 2nd/3rd June when Harrier members competed with their Yeovil Olympiad team-mates at the 2nd of this season’s Men’s British Athletics League on the Saturday at Portsmouth and at the South West Athletics League match on the Sunday at Exeter Arena. Another group of Harriers were also out competing at the Crewkerne 10km or 5km road races on the Sunday. U15 Archie Tyler (below) won the hilly Crewkerne 5k in a nippy 18.17. At the British Athletics League match, the Yeovil Olympiads team finished 2nd on the day, out of the 6 competing teams, and go top of the League after two matches (of 4). They are neck and neck with Tonbridge AC. Amongst the Harrier contingent competing for the team were some excellent performances in the field and on the track by u20 Ollie Thorner, 1st in the A string pole vault with 4.20m; 3rd in the A string 400m in 51.03; 1st in the B string High Jump with 1.90m; 2nd in the B string Long Jump with 6.45m.

Sam Harding doubled up with two 4th places in the A string 800m/1500m with 1.55/4.10; whilst u20 Michael Biss ran 4.33 for the B string 1500m(5th)

At the SW League match on the Sunday, the Yeovil team finished 7th out of the 12 competing teams, and lie in 8th overall after 2 League matches. u15 athletes Dan Maydew and Hannah Blundy won their respective 3000m track races in 10.00 and 11.05. Tommy Hummel ran 10.51 in the same event, whilst for the u17s Leo Stockman ran 10.04 and Lizzie Ingram was 2nd in the u17 girls with 11.00.

In the u13 events Florence Gummer and Jack Harvey both competed well, with Florence running 2.56 at 800m and a shot putt of 5.57m; whilst Jack ran a 200m sprint as well as an 800m in 2.33.For the u15s Harry Barton ran a nippy 100m in 12.37 and High jumped to 1.55m; Toby Watson and Nico Bosley ran 800m in 2.20 and 2.33 respectively. For the u17s Bernard Mealing ran 2.17 for the same distance.

Amongst the seniors u23 Felix Rusby ran a nippy 2.03 for 800m, whilst Simon Prior weighed in with good team points when launching the shot out to 7.89m.

At the Crewkerne 10km road race on a very hilly course the women’s race was won by Harriers Rachel Glaisher, whilst her husband and son were part of the winning Harrier men’s team of John & Dougal Glaisher, Justin Thomas and Andy Piper. Rachel’s time was 45.59 and she finished in 31st place overall. John was 6th in 39.23 whilst Dougal was 18th in 43.06. Andy Piper and Justin Thomas were 24th and 25th in 43.53 and 44.11 respectively. Paul Chadwick was next home in 46th, 49.38, and then Harriet Burr 52nd, 50.33; and finally Karen Shears in 135th in 64.23. There were 186 finishers.

The race was also part of the Somerset Race Series. Justin Thomas lies in 3rd place in the latest standings in the Series, with Andy piper , Craig Foley and Christian green all well placed for the men. In the Crewkerne 5km race, u15 Archie Tyler had a good run to win on that hilly course in 18.17.

Harrier training sessions continue to be very popular with youngsters catered for on a Monday evening for all track & field events, whilst older juniors and seniors in training for middle distance and 5k/10k races train on at Tuesday evening. See training information here.
