Wells City Harriers

"A FRIENDLY RUNNING CLUB THAT WELCOMES ATHLETES OF ALL AGES AND ABILITIES"

There has been plenty of racing happening in the past few days. This week’s report covers the first race in the Yeovilton 5K series, the Easter Bunny 10K, ERRA National Road Race, Butleigh Multi-Terrain, Manchester Marathon and a membership update for the new membership year starting from April. Remember, if you have been racing - let us know and we will share your report in the next article.

On the finish line: Sam Harvey left it all out there at the Yeovilton 5K

Yeovilton 5K

There was a good Wells City Harrier turnout for the first race in the 2024 Yeovilton 5K series. The conditions were near perfect, with a slight headwind during the 3rd and 4th kilometre, however much improved from the persistent wind and rain in the days leading up.

A few Harriers post race.

First Harrier home and race winner was Alexander Coombs in 15:54. Hannah was the second female home in a nippy time of 17:30. Graham Goldsmid also had a successful run, finishing first Male V60.

ERRA National U17 5K Road Race

On Saturday 6th April, Tom Webb was racing at Sutton Park in the ERRA National 5K Road Championships. On an undulating course with gale force winds Tom held off his competition and moved away in the last 2k to win in 15:30. That looks like being a very quick time on the day for the accompanying 12 stage relays which attracted the top clubs. The wind was so bad the PA system was swaying 6 feet side to side and shuttering became dislodged.

Another amazing achievement. Well done Tom!

Butleigh Multi Terrain 10K

Taking place on Sunday 14th April was the Wells City Harriers supported race and the 5th race in this year’s Somerset Series. The race is predominantly off road and takes in some lovely countryside (and a few hills with plenty of mud). Money raised from the race goes towards Butleigh village playing fields association.

It was a successful week for Alex Coombs who was first home after his midweek success at Yeovilton. Matt Lusby was close behind in second. Phoebe Aspinall was the first female Harrier to finish, followed by Lousia Saunders.

Harrier Results:

1st Alexander Coombs - 38:54

2nd Matthew Lusby - 39:31

4th Laurence Badman - 45:22

13th Steve Masters - 49:08

Manchester Marathon

On Sunday 14th April, Jeremy Linter hit the streets in Manchester to participate in the Manchester Marathon. He finished with a PB improving on his 2:59:18 set at the Abingdon Marathon back in October. Below Jeremy is posing with his new PB only to find out his chip was even more generous giving him a finishing time of 2:55:38.

Great progress and improvement - Well done!
