The Babcary 7.5 mile road race, sponsored by Avalon Sciences, was held on Sunday 28th February and attracted a field of 119 finishers. It was the first of the local community races that the Harriers support, and assist at, for 2016. The Babcary race has a pedigree going back over 20 years with Harrier Gary Tubridy organising, Race Directing and sponsoring, the event with lots of enthusiastic local marshals around the undulating course, and a great offering of tea and cakes back in the hall after the event.. First home on the day was Wells City Harrier Tim Hawkins in 43.34; with first woman being Linda Lascelles of Maiden Newton Runners in 48.25, 13th overall. Lin and husband Martin won the overall age graded awards for their endeavours.The race was also race number 3 in the Somerset Race Series 2016, sponsored by Yeovil Glass. (photo to follow)

 

 

Tim was followed home by Dan Miles in 45.41 for 2nd and Harrier Jon Gilling in 46.19 for 3rd. 2nd for the ladies was Emily Currie, Portishead Running Club,in 52.27; and 3rd was Rachel Heard of Langport Runners in 54.07. Full positions and times, and age graded performances, are in the column bottom right.

 

For Wells City Harriers there was an excellent turnout of 16 members in total with: Justin Thomas, 4th in 46.43; Graham Goldsmid 20th in 49.59; Andy Piper 23rd in 51.24; Rick Dukes 24th in 52.14; Mike Bosley 25th in 52.17; Roger Marriage 32nd in 53.36; Mike Rusca 33rd in 53.44;Paul Knight 40th in 55.23; Paul Chadwick 43rd in 56.06; Simon Carr 49th in 57.09;Craig Foley 54th in 57.42;Cath Goldsmid 76th in 64.21; Harriet Burr 78th in 65.18; Karen Shears 85th in 67.44. In the accompanying junior races we hear that Harriers Nico Bosley and James Carr had good runs for 2nd & 3rd places

The next Harrier organised event is the last of this year's Clive & Angela Thomas Street 5k Series races to be held on Wednesday 9th March 2016. That race will be number 162 in a sequence going back 27 years and will see a friendly and lively race around the High Street of Street. Full details on the entry form in the right-hand column. Come and give it a try if you haven't done it before. The following Sunday 13th March will see the next in the Harrier supported community events for 2016 when Harrier Pete Wright and the local Butleigh community organise the Butleigh 7 mile Multi-terrain race (about 70% off road) to raise funds for the local playing fields.
