Over 100 runners toed the start line at the latest in a long line of Street 5k races last night (Wednesday 8th November). In fact it was edition number 170 and we’d be keen to hear from anyone who thinks they may have run 100 or more! Whether it was your first edition or your 100th, we hope you enjoyed racing 5 laps: Tim Watson (Bristol & West) certainly did as he raced home to win in 16.10; whilst Alexandra Cutts (South West Road Runners) was smiling when she won for the women in 19.17. Read on for a bit more reporting on the latest in the Clive & Angela Thomas 5k series, and accompanying junior races, and to see full results (photo of the junior start in Oct 2017 by Al)

It seemed like a good night for racing though many must have been thinking it was a tad cold as they drove to Street with temperatures dipping to 2 degrees. It just shows what a bit of effort can achieve. There was no shortage of that on display by all who took part – and the youngsters always show how to do it when they started in the 1km and 2km races – it was great to see so many taking part – well done to their chaperones/parents for bringing them along to take part!

We have a few talented girls and guys in these age groups who I hope will carry on looking to break the juniors Street course records. For 1k (mainly school year 5 & 6) that’s 3.28  for the boys, held by Curtis Stevens; and 3.40  for the girls, held by Lucy Baldwin; and for 2k (school Year 7 & 8) that’s 6.52  for the boys, held by Alex Williams; and 7.26, held by Vera Assis. Those are impressive times. It should be no surprise that all of these record-holders trained with us on our Monday night junior sessions: so if you’ve got a youngster aged 8 and upwards bring them along! This time arouund Owen Dukes and Logan Moncrieff had a great battle to get close to the boy's 1k record and Alice King ran well to win for the girls. In the 2km race Ollie Bishop followed up his Sunday XC efforts with a win whilst Isabelle Walker was first back for the girls.

In the main event, it was good to see so many from the new Club at BHAM! taking part, along with the reliable lot from Yeovil Town RR, Langport Runners, Running For Time, MAC and Maiden Newton Runners. (Other clubs also eligible!). The prizes were reasonably well distributed amongst the Clubs:

1st overall                   Tim Watson (Bristol & West) 16.10

1st V40                        Tom Dukes (Wells City Harriers) 17.01

1st Male Junior          Charlie Cook (MAC) 17.18

1st V50                        Kenneth Rampere (MAC) 17.29

1st V60                        Paul Chadwick (Wells City Harriers) 21.44

1st V70                        Berni Mundy (Wells City Harriers) 23.47

1st Female                 Alexandra Cutts (South West Road Runners) 19.17

1st Female Junior     Holly Bigger (Wells City Harriers) 19.43

1st F45                        Linda Lascelles (Maiden Newton Runners) 20.03

1st F35                        Helen Southcott (Maiden Newton Runners) 21.38

1st F65                        Lesley Nesbitt (Yeovil Town RR) 25.05

1st F55                        Liz Martin (Langport Runners) 25.14

On the age graded basis (and some of us love looking at these as we get older!) Linda Lascelles takes the biscuit (& the cake) again with her impressive 86.7%, with Tim Watson and Kenneth Rampere sharing the men's honours with their 85.2% rankings, whilst Lesley Nesbitt’s 85.1%  is the only other 85+% effort.

Last month's (October 2017) results & report here. NEXT MONTH's EDITION will feature Mince Pies for all! Our thanks as ever to our intrepid marshals, time-keepers, results supremo(s), tea maker, and Race Director for edition number 170.

Note - we are currently having some problems with the Harrier website calendar functionality (to the left) - if it looks like we aren't doing any training or competitions then that's obviously not the case! Regular training sessions continue up to and including the week of 18th December; and between Christmas and the New Year there will still be some (secret) training going on....For now, click on the month heading and then click 'all categories' at bottom of the month calendar and most/all events will be shown (possibly in duplicate)!

WELLS CITY HARRIER SOCIAL EVENTS

It is brilliant that we have 80 members (& family) attending our ‘sold out’ Annual Dinner on Friday 24th November. Start at 7pm at The Swan in Wells.

Next up will be the pre-Christmas ‘parlauf’ run, followed by a curry. This takes place on Tuesday 19th December. Starting at the Millfield track at 6.30pm. Anyone attending and taking part will be paired up (to make roughly even pairs in terms of pace) and will then have the joy of seeing how many laps of the track they can cover as a team in the set time. It’s always interesting to see when the so called  ‘tortoises’ overtake the hares! Pre-booking needed for the Curry & drink after the session, starting at 8pm in The Elms, at a cost of £7.50. Choice of curry. Please add your name to the list in the Tuesday training session or let Hannah & Rex Whitcombe know if you want to book a curry This email address is being protected from spambots.
